SYNOPSIS

SYNOPSIS

Imagine being in an enormous, elegant cathedral and you are surrounded by thousands of animals of all descriptions: dogs, cats, pigs, snakes, parrots, eagles, rabbits and  ferrets. Sounds unbelievable! Yet such an event takes place each year in New York City's Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. This is the world famous Saint Francis Day Blessing of Animals.
On the first  Sunday of October the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, the world's largest cathedral, opens its doors to four thousand animals that slither, that fly, that swim, and that walk on two legs or more!
This incredible Animal Blessing attracts thousands of people from across North America and from Europe. And with them come an amazing array of pets: - monkeys, turtles, lizards, guinea pigs and of course dogs and cats.  They come to participate in the Earth Mass, also known as the Missa Gaia, a special ceremony that celebrates all the creatures of the earth. And they bring their beloved pets for the famous Pet Blessing.
"A Celebration of Creation" features the Paul Winter Consort performing the beautiful music of the Earth Mass. This wondrous music is a great experience that incorporates the voices of wolves, whales, eagles and loons and was composed to accompany the Blessing of Animals.
The highlight of the day is The Procession of Animals in which dozens of creatures including camels, llamas, horses, cows, lambs, raptors and even insects march down the two football fields long Cathedral isle to the altar where they are blessed by several bishops.
The celebration continues on the lush grounds of the Cathedral where the public's pets are individually blessed. Pet blessings can be very helpful for these wonderful creatures, especially the old and those ailing.
"A Celebration of Creation" DVD takes you behind the scenes of this extraordinary St. Francis Animal Blessing and tells the touching stories of  several human and animal participants. You'll visit Green Chimneys, the renowned therapeutic farm-school for severely challenged children. Each year two kids are chosen to  train a cow and a miniature horse for the opportunity to be in The Procession of Animals.
You will meet The Turtle Lady who has saved the lives of hundreds of turtles and tortoises and rehabilitated them right in her Manhattan apartment.  Then there is Cornelius the delightful pot bellied pig who shoots hoops and plays drums.
The film takes you to The Raptor Project in the Catskill Mountains. Here, world famous Master Falconer Jonathan Wood rehabilitates and trains birds of prey such as eagles and owls. One of these will be selected to lead The Procession of Animals.
Animal Blessings are an ancient Christian tradition having taken place in the churches of Britain and Europe for hundreds of years. The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine chose the Feast of St. Francis for the Pet Blessing as Francis is the patron saint of both ecology and of animals. The Cathedral felt that this was an appropriate time to draw attention to the Earth's environmental problems and to celebrate the creatures of our planet.
"A Celebration of Creation" captures all the beauty, the spectacle and the emotion of this amazing event that has grown into the largest pet blessing on Earth.
